An English teacher for over 25 years, Lois Refkin has designed and taught literature and writing courses in a wide range of areas, from contemporary American and world literature to personal essay writing, and she has presented her teaching techniques at several national conferences.
Among her favorite teaching experiences have been working with Japanese students for several months in Tokyo and studying Shakespeare in Stratford-Upon-Avon with fellow teachers, as the recipient of a prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities summer scholarship. Prior to becoming a teacher, Refkin worked in various editorial positions at Random House and McGraw-Hill, and she has recently been an educational consultant and contributor to the Knopf Doubleday e-book of “The Interactive Pride & Prejudice,” which has won the A.P.A. Revere Award in the Innovate Category for Beyond the Classroom. Refkin is also the author of the teacher’s guides for Grove/Atlantic’s “Nine Plays of the Modern Theatre” and the Center for New American Media’s documentary about New Orleans accents, “Yeah, You Rite.” A native New Yorker, Refkin earned her B.A. in English Literature from Wesleyan University and her M.A. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University.
